Well, not eactly gibberish, just not very human friendly.

Did you try gpsctl? It is part of the gpsd packacage.
If gpsd it running, then this should do it:
gpsctl -n
If gpsd not runnning you can try this:
gpsctl -n /dev/rfcomm0
