(see also OpenCPN which uses the NOAA coastline dataset as a
basename too [maybe not the most recent version though])

Congratulations, but careful about reinventing the wheel. I know
it's fun, I've written a gpsd client plotter too, but e.g. the
distance ring on the screen-shot 4 should really be a bit pear
shaped if you follow the geodesic true great circle distance and
plot it on a mercator projection. You can find code to do that
calc in various places, e.g. the `geod` software from PROJ.4.
Also Gerald Evenden has a newer great circle program too AFAIR.
