Follow-up Comment #1:
The `--datasum' option (which will print the datasum on stdout) was added to
the Fits program after version 0.11, so that part is already done. However,
the `--checkum' option wasn't implemented and after looking into it, I
recognized that by its definition, the FITS CHECKSUM keyword is primarily
meant to be used as a keyword, not on the standard output.
The reason is that by definition, if CHECKSUM is already present and nothing
has been changed in the file, the checksum will be zero! If its not present,
then adding it will change the newly calculated value.
