I think I know where the 0x01 character comes from.
Apparently this indicates how the text is encoded
(at least that is the interpretation in gammu source)

In the meantime, I found out why.
The 3410 seems to use a slightly different structure for the operator
logo message.
It returns two extra bytes just before the height and width bytes,
which confuses the software. If those bytes are skipped, the logo
displays fine in xgnokii.
I'm attaching a log showing the bytes (0x00 0x1E). I have no idea
yet what these bytes could mean.
