Trisquel was not accepted as a FSF recommended distribution until two
years ago and gNewSense was already recommended. Having a formal
appearence by RMS is not the same as having him recommend it to other
people. RMS talks with many people and has his photo taken with many
people, but in 2005 RMS did not publicly recommend distributions to use.

Both Trisquel and gNewSense have a right as given by the licenses of the
software to start their own product if they so wish. Canaima GNU/Linux
has that right as well, but if the Venuzuelan government does not take
its obligation to remove non-free software it will be business as usual.
Canaima could derive from gNewSense or Trisquel so it has less work to
do.

So to answer your question on why was Trisquel not recommended by the
gNewSense community, I think it is has something to do with this is the
gNewSense mailing list and not the Trisquel mailing list.
