Problem solved. I am posting this to the list so that future googlers
find the solution. I did indeed need the 0.2.2 version. I removed the
previous installation (a Debian package) and did a local tarball
install as described under "Installing from source": 
www.nongnu.org/geiser/geiser_2.html
