Regarding git and building the sources: There is a short section on the
development page: https://gcmd.github.io/dev.html#current which might
give you some hints.

To make development easier you could also create an account at
https://gitlab.gnome.org/ and create your Gcmd fork their so that
you can create merge requests against the origin of Gcmd. In this way
you don't need to send code changes via email.
