| I've reproduced that error with gcc 3.3.3 and binutils 2.15.90.

Further, the error occurs in this:

I don't propose to chase this further at the moment.  As far as I am
concerned 2.6.2c2 is a goer on Windows with a note to restrict gcc to 3.3.1.
