I'm running Fedora 14; this seems to be the best KDE distro that isn't
Canonical or Novell. My only major issues have related to video drivers (had
to switch to nVidia), and selinux (had to put in permissive mode, and wouldn't
recommend all those complex error pop-ups for newbies). As soon as Free video
drivers improve Fedora may be a good option for first time users (selinux
notwithstanding).

I installed this on a friend's machine recently. It seems to work well, except
performance is disappointing (haven't compared this to other gnome 2 distros
on the same machine however).
I find it very hard to know what to recommend as a first time distro these
days,
but I'm hoping that:
1. Debian will continue to improve along recent lines and eventually become
recommendable in its own right (I'd love to confidently hand out debian CDs to
technophobes)
2. Mint will continue to invest time and resources in the debian edition, and
basically become the "Debian repackaged for newbs / usability", though I've
heard that they include a lot of nasty non-Free software in their software
centre etc.
3. Fedora will continue to improve in stability and ease of use, and not make
future decisions that will introduce a nest of new bugs and crashes
Sam.
