To be fair, Apple did offer OLPC the use of OS X for free but Negroponte 
wanted a Free OS and chose GNU/Linux (with the help of red hat!)

It's just a pity that Apple refused to adopt a more pro Free software 
stance with their software and hardware, because they are definitely a 
company which relies more on its over funded marketing and design 
departments than it's actual products.
