Sorry guys, I know we're not a "this GPL product is better than that one"-type 
list, but I must mention ayttm.  It supports the same services that GAIM/all 
the others do*, but it has some other nice features too:

  a. it is the only unix-based client to have support** for the Yahoo basic 
webcam stuff (very recently - i.e. cvs ver - send as well as view).
  b. it has a (IMHO) better outlook on how people work - you have "contacts", 
each "contact" can have multiple "accounts", including different accounts on 
different services - i.e. "John" has an account "johndoe" on Yahoo, and an 
account on msn "address@hidden" and all I see is "John" on my list, 
which I could expand if I specifically wanted to talk to him on either media.
  c. there's a compiled version for Windoze, so it can be "just another thing 
that when you move to linux will be no different!".

Right, now for the catches :

* Yahoo! have very recently altered their login authentication and hence 
caused (IFAIK) all non-official messengers to fail.  All other services work 
just as well as in other (official/non-official) clients, with the possible 
exception of jabber if you use gateways to the other services - I had people 
yoyoing between jabber and yahoo for a while, but only because every time I 
removed the contact it came back - server issue I believe.
** Yahoo! webcams (not enhanced - this has still not been reimplemented) use 
patented JPEG-2000 format - this is a big problem, so the code is there to 
use libjasper, but if you have issues with using patented algos, don't 
install libjasper, and the resultant binary has no dependance upon the 
patent-encumbered code.
