[Fsfe-france] 01net Conference (December 20) |

Hi,
Finally Frederic Couchet was invited.
I thought about this and it was discussed in the past days
on the address@hidden mailing list. It occurs to me that being
invited at the round table is probably not the best strategy in this
case.
All speakers belong to the proprietary world and will discuss
about Free Software with a proprietary software vendor / user angle.
Frédéric will be the only Free Software representative present and
whatever he says during the round table will not change the tone of
the conference.
I tend to think that participating to the round table will
have the effect of blessing the conference as a Free Software event
where it really is a proprietary software event talking about Free
Software.
Instead I thought it would be better to inform people going
to the event that it is a proprietary event. It can be done by publishing
an article on various news sites and distributing it to people attending
the conference. I include a draft of the article, in French, with an
automated translation that will allow you to grab the basic idea.
Please let me know if you think this strategy is flawed for
some reason.
Thanks in advance,

<h3>Une vue propriétaire du Logiciel Libre</h3>
<p> Le 20 Décembre 2001, 01 Informatique <a
href="http://www.01net.com/rubrique?rub=2813&cpn=lib_90">réunit des
</p>
</p>
</p>
<dl>
</dd>
Ce choix élémentaire, baptisé <i>contamination</i>,
</dd>
Libre.
</dd>
</dd>
</dd>

< h3>Une seen owner of the Software Libre

</a > software owner so that they express and share their visions of the Free
Software.
</p >
< p > First demonstration of this type in France, it will permetra
with the listeners to better include/understand the strategies which
the actors of the software owner wish to implement to control and
privatiser Free Software. Although these operations are regrettable
and slow down progress of the Free Software, it is preferable that
they are expressed in public. We thus have the possibility of
analyzing them and of better preparing to answer it.
</p >
< p > the plan of the demonstration is suffisament detailed to
identify the subjects which will be tackled:
</p >
< dl >
< dt>Mixer the Free Software with software propriétaire
</dt >
< dd>Ce prone will be approached by several speakers. When Free the
Logiciel licence is not protective (BSD for example), it is possible
to create a software product based on Free Logiciel components and
components owners. The resulting product is then a software owner what
makes it possible the company editor to profit from the advantages of
the Free Software without having to contribute to it.
</dd >
< dt>Eviter the licences protectrices
</dt >
< dd>La round table concluding the conference will initially mention
the problem arising from GNU LPG This licence protects freedoms which
it associates the software, thus prohibiting the mixture with software
owner. The contractor must then choose between obeying under the terms
of GNU LPG or not using the software under GNU LPG. This elementary
choice, baptized < i>contamination</i >, disturbs because it makes
obstacle with the monopolization by the software owner.
</dd >
< dt>La complementarity of the patents and the Libres
</dt Software >
< dd>Les software patents constitutes a powerful means to take the
exclusive control of a Free Software or, failing this, to prohibit the
difusion of it. Their legalization in Europe would give the most
significant holders of patents (of which IBM and Microsoft, speakers)
an effective lever on Free the Logiciel production.
</dd >
< dt>Passer under silence the aspects éthiques
</dt >
< dd>La ethical position at the origin of the Free Logiciel movement
will have overlooked. It is difficult to deny that the methods of
diffusion of the software owner create a social damage by dividing the
users auquels prohibited to share the software, to improve it and to
study operation of it. To evoke this aspect of the Free Software would
highlight the fundamental incompatibility between the Free Software
and the software owner, invalidating the efforts makes to mix the Free
Software and the software owner. Best the strategy consists in
banishing the subject.
</dd >
< dt>Un tool marketing for the software propriétaire
</dt >
< dd>Le capital sympathy of the Free Software attracts the customer
and makes it possible to place solutions owners. The service companies
and editors presenting under a generic sign "Software Free" of the
products owners prevent also a too clear distinction between the Free
Software and the software owner. That makes it possible to standardize
the supply of systems which, as a whole, are owner.
</dd >
< dt>L' ASP: a means of contournement
</dt >
< dd>Les waiters of application available on line can be made up
entirely of Software Free, modified according to needs' and not
published. In the absence of act of publication it is possible to meet
the needs for all the prospective customers without having to obeir
under the licenses. This new means of marketing software solutions
owners even makes it possible to integrate software under GNU LPG into
it. It is necessary however to be vigilant and to be ensured never to
be in a situation which could be comparable with a distribution of
software.
