It looks like irc.freenode.net is not accessible from your client host.
Can you try running from a shell prompt the command:
host irc.freenode.net
If this works and you can correctly resolve the hostname to an IP
address, then try connecting directly to the IRC server port with:
telnet irc.freenode.net 6667
If this fails, then try one of the alternate IRC server ports, like
10000.
