I did this because several people in the #erc channel had requested
functionality like this, and I happened to be carrying it around in my
.emacs for two years.
To get the old behavior:
(setq erc-insert-timestamp-function 'erc-insert-timestamp-left
erc-insert-away-timestamp-function 'erc-insert-timestamp-left)
