I didn't actually think of this as an erc problem itself to be honest, hence why
I posted my first message to comp.emacs rather than here. 

For example I noticed when I upgraded from 22.0.93 to 22.0.95 erc didn't almost
change but it had stop from working already. Still I can use erc from 22.0.93,
and xchat if I want to, and there isn't anything which has changed in my system.

the poor connection isn't a fact here, I've got wireless and can use mldonkey,
surf the web, or use erc with no problems other than those mentioned.

Maybe someone else happens to suffer the same and can debug this or do something
about, or at least gives more clues than I do.
