The patch I submitted that went into rev 1316 breaks things on systems
that don't have a libintl dynamic library installed. I can't just back
out the rev because of the link problem that it solved. When I try to
use Macports' libintl for a static link I get link errors.

I'm digging into the right way to get this to build correctly. It
shouldn't be too hard, but I want to make sure that I end up with a
simple set of build instructions that don't involve setting up
everything I normally keep on my machine.
