The problem was that configure was messed up locally (my fault) and
failed to detect gettimeofday (or something related?). It's a GNU
system, so it has the function.
The only issue is whether it's something to worry about on any
platform. I suspect it isn't, and you might as well just make the
build fail if it can't use gettimeofday and perhaps worry about it if
that ever happens.
