I agree to some extent, but we actually recommend this in (info "(elisp)
Documentation Tips").  At the time we added this to that section, I
looked into it, and it turns out that most sources recommend steering
well clear of these abbreviations.  For better or for worse.

I only really care to remove i.e./e.g. in free-flowing text, but usually
leave it alone at the start of parenthetical remarks.  You can see that
pretty much all abbreviations are left as is in my patch.  A handful
were expanded though.

I don't claim that the patch is ideal, of course.  If I thought that it
couldn't be improved, I would have installed it already.  :-)
