Karthik and Timothy have managed to solved similar issues when
implementing LaTeX previews for Org mode.

AFAIK, Karthik (CCed) have been working on generalizing the preview
system to work in arbitrary major modes (not just Org mode). Maybe it
can be reused for Info reader.
