Your original code is present with very minor changes, and the feature works as you designed it.
A feature with a poor user interface is a misfeature. That double menu entry and that checkbox is like a wart on the nose; I cannot consider such a change to the user interface as a "very minor change".
You may remind that I turned that feature into a minor mode upon your request, and that I turned it into an opt-in minor mode upon your request. My only point is this thread was to at least keep the visible user interface clean.
