A suggestion: would it not be better to include a version of GNU Unifont in Emacs?The Unifont is so bad that I think that's even worse than showing tofu. :-/
Okay, you and Eli both think that it's "just too ugly".Perhaps there is another font that covers (at least) the complete BMP that could be included in Emacs?
About "showing tofu" vs "ugly font", I think that giving users a clear indication about the language is useful. Something with which they can see for example "it's chinese, so if I want to see this I need to install a font with chinese characters".
