It helps a little bit, but it is still not responsive enough.  In
particular, since I've set the keyboard's character repeat rate to a
high value (approx. 30cps), I no longer see a moving cursor.

It seems to me that the longer the buffer, the worse it gets.  Is this
observation correct?

BTW, while being in a buffer, is there a quick way to change the value
of bidi-display-reordering?  Using set-variable doesn't work; it only
knows bidi-paragraph-direction.
