I seem to recall that Richard has said in the past that the most useful
part of polls was not really any numerical tally, but the comments
people made; it can be useful tool in getting input from people that
aren't normally part of the discussion.

For the reasons you state, and others, of course, mere "votes" (without
a kind of rigor and scope which is more or less impossible for us to
achieve) seem almost useless.
