I have the default as well.  I have noticed that Emacs can take some CPU when 
it "should" be idle.  However, for the most part, I can't say I noticed any 
ill effects either.

I notice increased fan noice at work.

I usually have something like 50-200 buffer.  Reloading the desktop is not 
very fast :-)
