Well, I use tab to do that all the time. Interestingly, it is bound to minibuffer-complete, as opposed to SPC, which is bound to minibuffer-complete-word.
Don't know if that makes a difference for file names.Either way, I guess it is reasonable to give priority to the native character, i.e. space. If someone wants to map SPC to whatever, they can to that by adding the key to the keymap - right?
