[Duplicity-talk] write-only backup?

Does duplicity need to read any information from the remote side
during the backup? Or does it use the local cache to know what is
exactly on the remote side so write-only or push-only connection is
possible? Or put in other way, can duplicity backup to a filesystem
that only allows to create new files or directories and append to
existing files, but does not allow to read any existing file context
or metadata or list directories?
