This sounds a lot like bug https://launchpad.net/bugs/703142 where the
signature file was appearing twice and causing a similar assert error
(see my comment #5).

In that case, it was because of a .part file.  Maybe that's the case
here too?  Again, it would be good to see a full list of the files.
