Z/grepping through the system logs came up empty.  About the only
clue I can offer is that the backup drive is an external hard drive
connected via USB (Seagate FreeAgent Pro).  I've applied the
allow_restart bugfix, but perhaps there is still a problem here
somewhere.  Still, the drive hadn't been attached all that long before
the problem occurred.

Trying it again.. it worked!  Having experienced it once, I'll probe
further should it happen again.
