There are circumstances where the LilyPond typesetter will ignore your
request to place a line break at a certain point. For example, if you
place one in the middle of a bar it will not be honored. There is a
command in the same menu to allow one there.
If you post an example of your problem then it may become clear what the
trouble is (possibly after consulting the LilyPond documentation).
