I've done a little experimentation & it appears that gnome is reading
the first few bytes of a file and determining its type from that. I've
created an arbitrary binary file and declared it to belong to emacs, and
as long as I keep the first few bytes the same gnome continues to open
such files with emacs. The implication is that we could add a few bytes
at the start of the .denemo files to personalize them. It would be a
pain, of course.
