can't get breakpoints to work

I have installed DDD on a Debian linux system using jdk1.3. I am trying to
debug a Java application. The demo for Java works fine, but when I try to
run DDD on my application of interest (EditablePlotMLApplication from the
Berkeley Ptolemy project), I can't get breakpoints to work, even in the
main class, which is in the argument list to DDD. The application fires up
beautifully, but never stops at the breakpoints I set. (I have, of course,
checked the archives on this. Nothing there that seems to apply.) The
source files are numerous and spread over several directories.

 Any ideas whatever would be appreciated.
