That's my expectation, too. The drives which refused to format the 50 GB
BD-RE are quite old. (The coincidentially died power supply was old too,
whereas the involved drive is just one year old and survived fine.)
In SCSI/MMC specs there is no difference between single-layer BD and
multi-layer BD. Just larger sizes.

That would be a job for pktcdvd, if one could talk it into using BD media.
The packet size seems to be ok for BD chunk alignment (64 KiB). But it
seems that the driver still only accepts CD and DVD media. See
