[Bug-XBoard] Error on ./configure

Help - we get the following error when we type the ./configure for Xboard:
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output... configure: error: C compiler cannot 
create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

We have attached config.log. The Xboard folder is installed in /usr/local.
We use Ubuntu version 7.10.
