Thanks for the report.
I get the expected (not buggy) results when
using the latest test release:
ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/fetish/coreutils-4.5.3.tar.gz
$ expr 'abc
> xxxxx
> def' : 'abc
> .*
> def'
13
$ expr --vers
expr (GNU coreutils) 4.5.3
So I guess you should encourage RH to upgrade.
