1.4.16 doesn't fail like this. Please try that with the GPT patch from
http://domsch.com/linux/parted.
Also, GPT partitions are always primary partitions, never logical. You can
have 128 primary partitions (and theoretically an unlimited number, though
there's no good way to implement that in parted right now. mklabel gpt 1000
or something? :-)
