probably with 'patch'. versions between 2.1 and 2.5 were too buggy to
bother using; this is the sort of thing that broke. 2.1 was smarter than
the older versions of patch in this regard, and 2.2-2.4 suffered from
someone's attempts to improve it further. Perhaps it's a recurrence.
(I attempted to refresh my memory on this issue recently, but the
changelog doesn't make it apparent what the problems were ;-)
