A few days ago I found that some messages I wrote from my imail inbox
to an rmail file (file:...) by using 'o' were not actually in the file
later on. Unfortunately, I had deleted them from the inbox in full
faith that I had saved them. Well, they weren't critical, but this
happened more seriously a little while ago with a different file.

I used 'o' to write a couple of messages from my inbox to
file:/afs/csail.mit.edu/u/j/jems/messages/trips.msgs
But this time, to be in the safe side, I used 'i' to look
in trips.msgs before deleting the messages to my inbox.
To my shock, there was nothing recent in trips.msgs.
I renamed the bad file to be trips.msgs.truncated
and the ~ file (trips.msgs~) to be trips.msgs.good
As you can see, about half of the file was gone!

 -rw-rw-r-- 1 jems jems 3261270 May 14 00:31 trips.msgs.good
 -rw-rw-r-- 1 jems jems 1450643 May 28 23:02 trips.msgs.truncated

I then copied trips.msgs.good to trips.msgs, and proceeded
to use 'o' again from my inbox. This time they were appended
correctly:

 -rw-rw-r-- 1 jems jems 3295987 May 28 23:17 trips.msgs

This makes me pretty nervous ... I have been blithely using 'o'
and then deleting the filed messages without always reading
the appended-to file. What a pain it will be to have to check
the target file every time I save a message! And I surely won't
always remember.

Note: I did not have this file open elsewhere (e.g. in emacs rmail
or anything).

Julie
