make loses LD_LIBRARY_PATH

I get this odd problem on my powerpc-yellowdog-linux-gnu machine with
make 3.79.1 (see attached). For some reason, the LD_LIBRARY_PATH
environment variable gets dropped, but most (if not all) other variables
are still there. However, it doesn't occur on my sparc-sun-solaris2.7
system. I've looked briefly for a cause, but I can't really see why it
would happen.
