I hate cvs, too, (but not as much as a few other systems I've used), but
I don't think this is the problem. -P -d are defaults for me in my ~/.cvsrc:

I don't think directories go in the attic, like you say, you can't cvs
remove them, all you can do is cvs remove any files in them, and then make
a policy decision as to whether you use -P or not. I always use -P,
and put a .cvsignore file into "empty" directories that I do want
created on checkout or update.

So I think something is wrong in the repository, this message shouldn't
happen. Does it happen for you? I see this, all the time:

$ cvs update -P -d >/dev/null
cvs server: cannot open directory /mailutils/mailbox/include/private: No such 
file or directory
cvs server: skipping directory mailbox/include/private
cvs server: cannot open directory /mailutils/mailbox/include/public: No such 
file or directory

This doesn't seem right.

Neither of these directories exist in my working copy, so -P doesn't
help me.

p.s. Julie just sent me a tourist borchure from Sept Iles (with a
picture of her on the front page) and it has english translations
of the french in it, and the translations are hysterically funny:

  Welcome to our saline air scented oasis!

  The greedy ones will be delighted by the gastronomical
  experiments offered by the fresh products of the area.

I can only hope my french can offer as much amusement to her. It's
interesting, though, it is difficult to translate gourmand into
english, especially so it doesn't mean the same as gourmet.
