I don't quite understand its semantics. E.g. what will
BSD_ME_HARDER=0 and BSD_ME_HARDER=1 mean? And what is the default,
when BSD_ME_HARDER is undefined (i.e. what you call "GNUish
behaviour")?
It would work the same way as POSIXLY_CORRECLY.
