Ah, right, in our case we can assume that a recent enough Xorg is
installed, and thus simply use 

PKG_CHECK_MODULES([X11], [x11], [have_x11=yes], [have_x11=no])

and then use have_x11, X11_CFLAGS, and X11_LIBS.
