Here is the problem as I understand it. Your computer is using FC4,
that's okay for me. Before switching distributions late in 1998 I ran
a Red Hat based one.

And you are booting sometimes normally with GRUB. Did your installer
remember to configure an initial root device? Those are needed for
EXT3. According to the Mini-HOWTO for the distribution I use an
initial root device is necessary for booting off of an EXT3 partition,
the initial root device typically contains the necessary modules to
indeed boot the system.

Or it was during the kernel epoch leading up to the first generation
of the 2.6 series of kernels. It might be fact now.

Next question, can you provide for us the contents of your menu.lst?
And please do not send things out in HTML, some of us do not have the
facilities for viewing that style of mail. If at all possible that is.

This works: 
    Power off/power on machine (machine boots Linux normally) 

This doesn't work: 
    [from the root shell prompt] 
    init 6 
    [Machine shuts down normally, cd-rom light flashes, hdd light
flashes, screen remains dark] 
    wait forever :-)

This machines boots/reboots Grub/FC4 normally with the same BIOS
setup.
