If you have a win9x floppy handy with fdisk boot it and run 'fdisk /mbr'

This will rewrite your mbr (which i think is screwed up somehow).

Then boot linux using your rescue disk, and reinstall grub using
'grub-install /dev/hde'

When you restored your machine from backup to the new hard drive you
should not have restored the mbr. The drive is almost always going to be
different to your previous drive so you need to use the grub-install to
install grub. as file will be in a different location on the hard drive.
