I didn't say that writing an IDE device driver would be hard. But do
you want to write device drivers for SCSI interfaces as well? IIRC,
SCSI was more popular in the old days (I had a SCSI-only PC, indeed).

Furthermore, it is impossible to add such a feature into Stage 1
anyway, because of the size limit. Probably it is also impossible or
quite difficult to add it into Stage 1.5. This means that the
documentation would be more complicated again.

So I don't think it is feasible for GRUB to have device drivers to
access hard disks in normal systems.
