Peter,

sounds like your old BIOS has problems with the way the floppy is probed in 
stage1. Thierry Laronde has done a complete rewrite of the stage1 code. The 
patch can be found at http://alpha.polynum.org/misc/grub-0.92.a_cd+ef.diff.gz

I haven't tried the patch myself, but it seems to handle problematic 
situations much better than the old code.
