Did anyone replicate my results from comment #11?

For some reason, now when I run that comment's test case, I'm getting
different (and worse) results from what I reported back in August.  And I get
these same (worse) results even if I manually apply commit ab55f50a's e.tmac
change to my 1.22.4 installation, so it's not some subsequent change
confounding things.  (There has been only one subsequent change to tmac/e.tmac
<http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/groff.git/tree/tmac/e.tmac> itself, and it
changed only comments.)

In any case, it's pretty clear commit ab55f50a should be reverted, as it
breaks basic (non-footnoted) two-column output -- even if I can't quite agree
with my past self on exactly what the broken output is.

I still need to test Bjarni's patch from comment #12.
