I reviewed the libao-macosx plugin and it uses the CoreAudio Framework
directly to output sound (This bypasses QuickTime framework which sits on
top of CoreAudio). The person who originally added sound for the Mac (in
gnubg) utilized Quicktime because it already has support for a wide range of
audio formats with little effort.
Effectively libao will replace the Quicktime framework.
