I can't reproduce the problem here (by trying to play a sound which 
isn't present whilst another sound is playing), I'm using windows xp - 
it could be that different versions of windows act differently.

I'll add some error messages if a sound file is missing or fails to play 
(along the lines of your patch) - thanks.
