OK, you certainly have a good point here. And it would definitely be
best to have a competitive file selection dialogue in GTK+. But as you
write below it's not a GNUbg issue, and it's certainly quite some
work.
Actually, only because of this and that there seemed to be (quite
some) demand I suggested this IMHO cheap solution. Also someone said
here recently that the majority of GNUbg users are/will be Windows
users, intended or not. So it could remain one (or few) exception for
the majority.
However, I respect your argumentation anyway.

But sorting on different things than filenames, details on files, and
so on would be really nice, not to mention a kind of preview.
