I hope you'll get a better answer from the tar maintainer,
but in the meantime:

Perhaps you could evaluate ``star''.  It might serve you better.
(I have no experience personally, though.)

And, of course, you can look at the code, or fund some of your
partners to look at the code.  The fix may be trivial and cheap.
